NFP – Methods

Which method of Natural Family Planning will work best for you? Click the headings below for additional information.

Creighton Model

Creighton relies upon the standardized observation and charting of biological markers that are essential to a woman’s health and fertility. These “biomarkers” tell the couple when they are naturally fertile and infertile, allowing the couple to use the system either to achieve or to avoid pregnancy. These biomarkers also can indicate abnormalities in a woman’s health.  There are doctors trained specifically in this method, who can use your charts to help detect and correct fertility issues.

This method is an excellent choice for:

  • Women that wake up at different times every day.
  • Couples that are most comfortable monitoring/tracking only one fertility sign.
  • Women with irregular cycles, fertility medical conditions (such as endometriosis, infertility, or PCOS, etc.), and want medical help in correcting them.

Couple to Couple League/ Sympto-Thermal Method

The SymptoThermal Method of NFP works by interpreting two or three signs of fertility to indicate what phase of fertility the woman is in.  This is known as a “cross-check” method, as it tracks external observations in addition to body temperature.  When these signs are observed together, a more complete picture of the woman’s fertility takes shape.  It is highly effective for women with irregular cycles.  Couple to Couple League is the organization that teaches this method. You will be taught by a highly trained couple using this model of NFP, who will assist you in learning and interpreting your charts.

This method is an excellent choice for:

  • Women who wake up at more or less the same time (within ½ hour) every day.
  • Couples that like the idea of monitoring several signs, so they always have a back-up.
  • Women who may have irregular cycles, but are not looking to do anything drastic to fix them.

Marquette Method

The Marquette Model (MM) system of NFP brings 21st century technology to NFP by using the ClearBlue Easy Fertility Monitor, a device used at home which measures hormone levels in urine to estimate the beginning and end of the time of fertility in a women’s menstrual cycle. The information from the monitor can be used in conjunction with observations of cervical mucus, basal body temperature, or other biological indicators of fertility.  A new Marquette Method Instructor is starting to teach in the KC area.  Contact Sarah Streitwieser in the Church office for details and questions.

This method is an excellent choice for:

  • Couples seeking to space pregnancies
  • Couples struggling with infertility
  • Breastfeeding women
  • Peri-menopausal women
  • Women with irregular cycles
  • Women interested in health monitoring
