Justice or Mercy?
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
The scriptures tell us we are living in the “last days.” The Letter to the Hebrews states:
In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe… (Heb 1:1-2).
That does not mean that the world will end tomorrow, but, “our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness [and] put on the armor of light…” (Rom 13:11-12).
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy. Below are some excerpts from St. Faustina’s Diary, in which she recorded what Jesus told her during the private revelations she had with him.
“Write: before I come as a just Judge, I first open wide the door of My mercy. He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice…” Diary, 1146
“…I am prolonging the time of mercy for the sake of sinners. But woe to them if they do not recognize this time of My visitation. My daughter, secretary of My mercy, your duty is not only to write about and proclaim My mercy, but also to beg for this grace for them, so that they too may glorify My mercy.” Diary, 1160
“Before the Day of Justice, I am sending the Day of Mercy.” Diary, 1588
Easter announces the immensity of God’s mercy; His mercy is like an ocean and the Feast of Divine Mercy begs the world to approach this unfathomable fount of mercy. Salvation depends on submitting ourselves to God’s mercy. Remember, justice gives us what we deserve, but mercy gives us the forgiveness that we do not deserve.
“You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.” Diary 1319
Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life,
