Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
We continue our celebration of the Resurrection on this Third Sunday of Easter and the Gospel continues to reveal the appearances of Jesus to His disciples after He had risen from the dead.
However, since I know many of you have been wondering where I have been lately, I thought I would use this column to explain what has been going on with me.
At 2:00AM on the Monday after Easter, I was awakened with severe pain in my left eye. It was extremely red and infected. I went to my ophthalmologist early the next morning and they diagnosed me with a severe infection inside of my eye (endophthalmitis) and my doctor started me on antibiotics immediately. But, soon after, I lost vision in that eye and was sent to a retina doctor.
The retina doctor injected antibiotics directly into my eye (I will spare you the painful details) and I had surgery a day later. Unfortunately, because of the type of bacteria that caused the infection, my eye experienced significant damage. The doctor is not confident that I will regain vision in that eye. However, I know many people have been praying for me, so I am hopeful that at least some vision will return.
Unfortunately, my left eye was my strong eye (I had lazy eye as a kid) and did most of the work. So, my right eye is struggling to take over. The doctors do say that within a week or two my right eye should start focusing better. As of now I cannot read the text in the Missal. I am hopeful I will be able to return, at least in a limited capacity, by the weekend of May 3rd –4th.
“Thank you” to everyone who has offered prayers for healing and restoration of my vision.
Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life,
