Catechists and aides are priceless and without their committment and willingness we could not carry out this most important of ministries: passing on the faith to the next generation.  Parents are the first and foremost formators of their child's faith formation and outside of that our parish catechists and aides help build up the community by sacrificing their time and generously giving of their talents to serve and draw our young parishioners into a greater knowledge and love of Christ and His Church.

Please prayerfully consider being a catechist or aide at Ascension.  You can make a significant difference in the lives of our young parishioners.  We are always in need of catehcists and aides for our various programs.  Please give us a call for more information and we'd be happy to talk to you - 913-681-7683.

If Your Child Misses Class

As parents, you are the primary educators of your child's faith.  Our program makes it a priority to communicate with parents what their child is learning in class by sending out weekly emails. If your child is in 1st - 8th grade we ask that if they have to miss class due to an illness or some family emergency that you help your child make up the work they missed.  1st - 6th grade is to read the chapter they missed and do the activities in the book and then show it to their catechist or aide at the next class.  Year I and S&L students (usually 7 & 8 graders) are to write a one page paper on the topic they missed and how it relats to living our Catholic Faith.  Below is a syllabus for each grade (if not listed it will be soon):

About Family Formation

Do you as a parent want to be more involved in helping your children come to know and love Jesus Christ?  Their Catholic Faith is the greatest of gifts to pass onto your child that will affect their whole lives long after they have left home.

Family Formation is a truly innovative K-6th grade Catholic religious education program.  Based on the principle that "Parents are the primary educators in the Faith"  [General Directory for Catechesis (GDC) 255, Family Formation] revolves around weekly family gatherings and home lessons.  This shared learning experience spills over into the family's everyday life.

Family Formation:

  • A great Catholic curriculum!
  • Brings the Faith alive through dynamic lessons, activities, and audio CD's
  • Follows the three-year liturgical cycle and points families to what is happening in the Church year.  See complete 3 year topic overview.
  • Is driven by Sacred Scripture
  • Is faithful to the teaching of the Magisterium
  • References the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • Received the Imprimaturof Archbishop Harry J. Flynn of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 2007

Family Formation at Ascension

We meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month from September - May from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

In our first year we had a great response - 121 families and 187 students.

Here is some feedback from this year:

~ It was a great way for our family to talk our Catholic Faith at home.

~ I felt my daughter was more engaged and it allowed her to talk about her faith more than in the past.

~ My husband became more involved than he ever had with the faith formation of our kids.

~ Our kids really enjoyed the weekly lessons and time we spend together.
